Backstory
The Freezing Crucible (Ages 16–20)
Born to a lesser noble house in the northern reaches of Coerthas, Lancellox Vallemere’s life was mapped out before he could even wield a wooden training sword. At sixteen, he was bound to squirehood, serving under the proud banner of his family name. His teenage years were not spent in comfortable courts, but in the freezing trenches of the Coerthas Highlands, watching seasoned warriors fall to the devastating fury of the Dravanian Horde. It was a brutal education that forged his raw martial talent into something unyielding. By the age of twenty, he had finally earned his knightly spurs, standing proud as a freshly minted protector of the Holy See.Then, the world shattered. In the year 1563 of the Sixth Astral Era, the political landscape of Eorzea shifted, and the gates of Ishgard slammed shut. Lancellox, caught on the wrong side of the border during a deployment, found himself locked out of his homeland overnight. Stripped of his purpose and his future, he was left stranded in a foreign realm with nothing but his battered armor and the clothes on his back.
The Cost of Freedom (The First Six Months)
For the first two months of his sudden exile, panic was replaced by cold desperation. His most vital companion—his loyal war-chocobo, Valebran, whom he had raised since the day the beast hatched—remained trapped behind the giant stone walls of the city. Lancellox refused to leave his partner behind. He spent the next eight weeks selling his elite martial skills to any merchant caravan or regional outpost willing to pay, scraping together every single piece of silver. For the next three months, he endured a long, grueling season of self-imposed poverty. Living off cheap trail rations and sleeping in the dirt, Lancellox poured his entire life savings into the pockets of a high-risk smuggling ring. The gamble paid off at the border of the Black Shroud, where a massive, armored, steel-clad war-bird was finally delivered safely into his arms. With his partner restored and a surprise surplus of hazard pay left in his coin purse from months of relentless hunting, the twenty-year-old knight headed straight for the maritime haven of Limsa Lominsa. In that city of absolute freedom, far away from the judgmental eyes of the orthodox church, Lancellox spent his remaining coin at a high-end establishment. It was a night of unadulterated luxury and sensual celebration—the exact moment he officially became a man, shedding the heavy weight of religious guilt and fully embracing his newfound liberty.
The Phantom Lance of the Shroud (Ages 20–34)
For the next fourteen years, Lancellox roamed Eorzea as a highly skilled, yet elusive, freelance knight. He became a familiar fixture in local taverns, always traveling with three or four high-risk bounty posters tucked into his weathered satchel. He carved out a reputation among the Ixal beastmen of the Black Shroud. While the local Gridanians fought defensively, Lancellox brought the aggressive, heavy pressure he had learned while hunting dragons. His physical appearance transformed along with his lifestyle. While his original Temple Knight uniform was eventually beaten into scrap metal by years of relentless combat, he refused to abandon his identity. The replacement cobalt and maille and mythril plates he commissioned was intentionally crafted to mirror his original Ishgardian armor—kept brilliantly polished as a loud, private keeper of his heritage. During a catastrophic battle early in his career, his shield was shattered, forcing him to block, parry, and punch with his bare steel gauntlets. The original hand armor was twisted into scrap metal, but when he finally commissioned a replacement pair, he had the adamantite dyed a distinct, deep Ishgardian Blue—a quiet, private keeper of his heritage.Tragically, throughout his entire fourteen-year exile, Lancellox remained completely unaware of a devastating truth: while he was fighting to survive in the south, the Dravanian Horde completely overwhelmed and obliterated the northwestern reaches of Coerthas, wiping House Vallemere off the map entirely.
The On-Call Vanguard (The Present Day)
Lancellox never intended to hide from the world, but his relentless work ethic made him incredibly difficult for intelligence networks to track. He didn't stay at comfortable inns or use standard communications, preferring to camp in the wilds alongside Valebran, whose custom saddle acted as a mobile armory holding a sword, a shield, a claymore, and a halberd. The Scions of the Seventh Dawn had spent months pursuing rumors of this "Hedge Knight" before a tactical emergency forced their paths to cross. Pinned down by a massive Ixali ambush party in a narrow Shroud ravine, a Scion reconnaissance team led by Thancred was facing certain disaster. Without a word of warning, Lancellox and Valebran burst through the thicket. The seasoned veteran did not possess the flashy, magical abilities of the realm's more fantastical heroes; his power was grounded entirely in muscle memory, physical grit, and chivalric valor. Drawing his sword and shield, he became their guardian, absorbing the brunt of the enemy’s momentum. When the swarm grew too dense, he swapped his tactics—utilizing a massive claymore to sweep enemies away from his allies, before finally drawing his heavy halberd for a display of total battlefield aggression to hold the line.Recognizing an elite, unaligned military powerhouse when he saw one, Thancred offered the knight a unique contract on behalf of the Scions. They agreed to let Lancellox keep his general freedom to wander Eorzea as a knight-errant, chasing bounties and riding with Valebran just as he always had. In exchange, he accepted a special linkshell and a steady retainer fee, placing himself officially "on call" for whenever the Scions require a heavy, trusted frontliner to protect their scholars.Today, he roams the realm with a purpose, ready to drop everything at a moment's notice to bleed for his new found family, completely unaware that his journey will eventually lead him back to the graveyard of his ancestral home.

Personality, Appearance, & Traits
Core Personality Breakdown
The Gentleman Mercenary
Lancellox possesses the poise, refined manners, and pattern of speech of an Ishgardian noble. However, fourteen years on the road have stripped him of any aristocratic arrogance. He speaks to a refugee or a stable hand with the exact same respect and warmth he would show to a peer.
Valiant
In combat, he is bold and daring under pressure, ensuring that his allies stay alive above all else by rushing into the fray. He enjoys the act of being courageous. Despite his more egregious flaws, he is a lion in battle.
The Joy of the Unfettered
Having escaped a freezing, rigid theocracy where every action was monitored by church orthodox, Lancellox has a massive appetite for life's simple pleasures. He genuinely loves good wine, rich food, fine clothes, and sensual company. He doesn't indulge to be gluttonous; he indulges because he knows tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Isolated
Beneath his easygoing charm and confident swagger lies the deep, lingering ache of an exile. He is a man without a country, living with the silent guilt of being safe in the south while his countrymen suffered through the Calamity. He masks this loneliness by keeping people at a comfortable distance, using his charm as a shield.
The Bird Comes First
His deepest loyalty belongs to Valebran. Lancellox will openly negotiate with clients to ensure his war-chocobo receives premium stables and top-tier gysahl greens before he even looks at his own tavern room. If you insult the bird, the noble charm vanishes instantly.
Sentinel Habits
Whenever he enters a new tavern, outpost, or Scion headquarters, he unconsciously scouts the perimeter. He notices structural weak points, exit routes, and defensive chokepoints a few moments after walking through the door—an old knightly habit he has a hard time switching off.
Reminiscent
When he is deep in thought, stressed, or trying to process complex emotions, he will mindfully polish or trace the edges of his blue-dyed gauntlets. It is a grounding mechanism that reminds him of who he is when the world gets too chaotic.
Flawed Diplomat
Despite being a lethal frontline fighter, he can sometimes choose to try to defuse tense situations with wit, humor, and a disarming smile.. "try to". It is not his forte. He knows that drawing steel is loud and expensive; a well-placed compliment or a shared drink can potentially solve a problem before it gets worse... but it doesn't always go that way.
Valebran 's Personality
Just like Lancellox, Valebran carries himself with a distinct, dignified discipline left over from his Temple Knight days. He is highly intelligent, calm under pressure, and displays an unbothered, steady confidence. He treats peaceful strangers with immense patience, but the second danger approaches, he shifts instantly. Protective of his master.
The Feathered Reflection
The Chivalrous War-Bird
A Mutual Appreciation for the Ladies
In a hilarious mirror to his rider, Valebran is an absolute sucker for women. If a lady approaches to admire his weathered barding or smooth feathers, the massive war-bird turns into an immediate softie, preening proudly and nudging her shoulder for attention.
The Shared Vulnerability
Just the same as his master occasionally fumbling a suave noble demeanor when too distracted or too deep in his drink, a hungry Valebran entirely ruins his majestic military presence during these encounters by trying to sneakily pluck a snack right out of a lady's hand or satchel mid-conversation, leaving his rider to awkwardly apologize for the theft.
The Stable Menace (Keep an Eye on Him)
His appreciation for the opposite sex extends primarily and with more instinct to his own kind. Stable masters and travelers are heavily advised to keep a very close eye on Valebran if there are female chocobos in nearby stalls. Much like his rider losing his focus at a tavern bar, this usually dignified northern destrier will completely forget his military training, pacing his stall, showing off his feathers, and trying to charm the local southern fillies. In fact, across the three city-states, there are reportedly quite a few unclaimed chocobo eggs left in various local stables—a legal and financial headache that both rider and mount completely refuse to acknowledge or take responsibility for.
Physical Appearance
Height
6'10.5" / 209.8 cm
Build
Lean, athletic, and wire-muscled.
Physique
Lancellox stands at the standard maximum height for an Elezen male. His frame is built for long-term conditioning rather than raw bulk, showing the practical muscle density expected of someone who spent years on the march and handling heavy military equipment. He relies on a balance of reach, endurance, and a mix of steady and clever footwork rather than overwhelming physical strength.
Facial Features
He carries typical aristocratic Elezen features with sharp cheekbones, a straight jaw, and dark hair. He maintains a trimmed, kept beard—a lingering habit from his military days to stay presentable despite living on the road.
The Eyes
He has pale, ice-blue eyes. His gaze is usually quiet and observant, standard for a veteran who has spent over a decade tracking bounties and watching his surroundings in the wilds, though with a constant adventurous twinkle.
His posture is still somewhat stiff due to his formal knightly training but significantly more relaxed compared to the earlier years of his exile. While the leftovers of his upbringing and previous life make him stand out in a casual southern tavern setting, he is on the hunt even when off-duty. Because he grew up in a heavily clothed, conservative northern society, his focus is easily drawn to the more revealing, risqué clothing styles common in the southern realm, leading to appreciative stares and perhaps some particularly phrased comments or compliments in casual conversation.

Fighting Styles & Gear
MARTIAL DISCIPLINE
Lancellox uses minimal aether as enhancements to his abilities in combat alongside muscle memory, physical conditioning, and conventional chivalric tactics. His versatility comes from his capacity to switch weapons to match the needs of each battle, though he tires like any ordinary mortal during overlong engagements.
The Vanguard
Sword & Shield
Tactical Role
Frontline Defense / Crowd Control.
The Style
Lancellox relies heavily on the sword-and-board tactics he trained in as a temple knight though modified and adapted to his years in exile having to fight alone or with only a few allies. He uses his height and skeletal leverage to brace against incoming impacts, absorbing brute-force attacks with a heavy kite shield. His offense in this style is functional and close-quarters, utilizing simple shield bashes and short, practical sword thrusts and slashes to keep enemies at bay. Relying heavily on the defensive ability of the shield.
Defensive Guard
Claymore
Tactical Role
Clearing the Chaffe / Large Creatures
The Style
Devoid of standard dark magic or aetheric abilities. He utilizes the weight and momentum of a conventional greatsword for wide, sweeping strikes or heavy single target cleaves and thrusts. This style focuses on creating space, keeping multiple combatants from flanking his allies, and exploiting timing gaps when an opponent overextends. Also utilized if the foe is just... very big and he has few allies.
Aggressive Reach
Halberd
Tactical Role
Offensive Shock / Reach
The Style
Forged directly from standard anti-dragon infantry training. He uses the polearm’s reach to keep threats at a distance, thrusting into weak points in enemy armor. The halberd's rear hook is used practically to snag the gliders of airborne foes or trip rushing targets. It is an exhausting, high-energy style meant for holding a narrow choke point or simply maximum ferocity and lethality as fast as possible
Gear & Mobile Equipment
Cobalt Maille
He wears chainmail with plating on limbs and joints similar to what he wore as a temple knight. The armor is kept shining and bright, hinting the underlying vanity and martial pride he has maintained
The Blue Hands
A pair of adamantite gauntlets dyed a distinct hue of Ishgardian blue. Early in his exile, his shield shattered during a desperate engagement, forcing him to block and parry incoming blade edges with his armored hands. The original gauntlets were ruined in the process. When he could finally afford a replacement pair, he had them dyed as a quiet, personal reminder of his home.
Valebran's Temple Barding
Valebran wears the official heavy barding he was issued back during his time in the Temple Knights. Lancellox does his absolute best to keep his bird's gear polished and repaired, but the armor heavily shows its wear and tear. Because he lacks the specific materials and refined metals native to Ishgard—particularly the unique ore that gives the armor its signature bright, silvery finish—the barding looks dulled, mismatched with southern patch-repairs, and deeply weathered. He has considered finding new barding for Valebran, but the original is just effective. What isn't broke, as they say.
Modified Chocobo Saddle
A heavy-duty piece of mercenary leatherwork fitted over the barding. The saddle features quick-release iron brackets that allow Lancellox to securely mount and manually draw his sword, shield, claymore, or halberd depending on the terrain. Because of the sheer weight of carrying three heavy weapons and half-plate barding, it slightly reduces his bird’s maximum overland speed compared to a lighter racing or courier mount.

RP Hooks
The Fellow Professional
Mercenaries, Bounty Hunters, Adventurers
The Connection
You have crossed paths with Lancellox on the road or at local tavern bounty boards across the three city-states.
The Prompt
Maybe your character was tracking the exact same beastmen or bandit camp or other bounty, only to arrive and find Lancellox wiping his blade while Valebran proudly paces around a cleared camp. Alternatively, you might have shared a camp with him in the wilds, trading whetstones, trail rations, and war stories to pass a cold night.
Best For
Martial characters, rough-and-tumble sellswords, and independent adventurers.
The Dangerously Dressed
Limsan Pirates, Thanalan Dancers, Risqué Attire
The Connection
Your character favors the bold, revealing, or risqué fashions of the southern realms—and you have caught this freelance staring.
The Prompt
Lancellox is an absolute sucker for a low-cut neckline, a flash of thigh, or exposed midriffs. If your character catches him staring or approaching to try his charm because of what you're wearing, you have the perfect excuse to tease him, buy him a drink to hear his sometimes archaic overly poetic or analogy-filled flirting attempts, or bluntly call him out on it.This could even lead to finding a quiter secluded place for some off the books fun.
Best For
Flirtatious characters, dancers, confident ladies, and characters who enjoy playful, lighthearted banter or even seeking something more sexually inclined (no judgement here, I enjoy ERP too. Feel free to ask!)
The Scion Network
Fellow Scions, Archons, Informants
The Connection
You are affiliated with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and have to deal with the logistics of keeping him "on call."
The Prompt
Because Lancellox values his freedom and doesn't sit around the Waking Sands (or Rising Stones later in the story), your character might be the one tasked with activating his linkshell when he is needed. Perhaps you are a scholar he has been assigned to protect, or a fellow fighter like Thancred who joins him at the bar to swap notes on local targets (and local ladies) after a brutal mission.
Best For
FFXIV story-focused characters, tactical minds, and members of the Scion network.
The Feathered Icebreaker
Stable Hands, Animal Lovers, Passersby
The Connection
Your character noticed the giant, meticulously groomed, armored war-chocobo standing outside the tavern.
The Prompt
Valebran is a massive, steel-clad beast, but he has a gentle disposition and a bad habit of trying to snatch snacks from unsuspecting people. If your character approaches the bird to feed him a treat, admire his Ishgardian barding, or scold him for stealing your food, Lancellox will immediately step over with a warm smile, a smooth apology, and an open invitation to sit down and chat.
Best For
Casual tavern interactions, civilian characters, stable workers, or anyone who loves chocobos.
